Hudson-

Wednesday’s big Patroon Conference match-up featured 10-1 Maple Hill heading to Hudson to take on the 8-2 Bluehawks. It was a close game until midway through the first quarter when Maple Hill went on a little run to get the edge over Hudson to take a 14-10 lead after one quarter of play.

Opening up the second quarter of play, still having a two-point lead, up 14-12, Maple Hill went on a 8-0 run to take a 22-12 lead. Maple Hill would finish the first half up 28-17 at that point, was the largest lead of the game for them.

Maple Hill kept on the attack in the 2nd half going on a run taking a 45-24 lead in the third quarter. Hudson did go on a 9-0 run of their own to cut the lead down to twelve, but it wasn’t enough for them as Maple Hill finished off the game outscoring them 8-4 the rest of the 4th quarter.

Jenna Hoffman lead Maple Hill in scoring, with 10 points. Abby Utter had two three’s and finished with 8 points. For Hudson, Deja Beauford did the majority of her team's scoring, finishing with a game high 19 points. Abby Jepsen had 6 points, all of them coming from down town.

Shots weren’t falling for Hudson for the better part of the game, causing Maple Hill to get the win over them by the score of 53-37. It was a tough and disappointing game for Hudson as this loss has Patroon Conference implications, as highlighted by Hudson’s coach Brice Ivery.

“We have to bounce back, you know we want to. But that was for a piece of the Patroon if we won the rest of the games. I’m just disappointed. It was their day (Maple Hill) they won. I take nothing away from those girls. They worked hard, they beat us.”

Maple Hill's coach Seth Hendrick talked about how big of a win this game was for his team.

“Actually, the last couple of years Hudson has been up top in everything and we’ve been kind of in the shadows. So, we’ve been playing pretty good this year. It’s good to be back on top again.”

Hudson falls to 8-3 while Maple Hill improves to 11-1 on the season.

Delmar-

Electric is what you would use to describe the atmosphere inside the gym at Bethlehem High School on Tuesday Night. The Eagles used a big third quarter to pull away and get the win over Saratoga 75-65 and take the top spot in the Suburban Council Blue Division and Class AA behind Patrick Ryan’s game high 20 points.

It was a match up of undefeated teams before the contest tonight and everyone knew what was on the line as warm ups started. However it was not a ‘wow look at him go’ game for Bethlehem, as they used key reserves and all around team effort in the win.

As the game got started it was clear these were two heavyweights throwing blows, back and forth they went, it was 16-16 with three minutes left in the first when Saratoga Called a time out and we all could catch our breathe. However it was Bethlehem who found themselves trailing in the closing seconds of the quarter when Justin Barnes hit a corner three to give the Eagles a 21-20 edge going into the second.

The pace slowed down in the second and as it should. However both teams were throwing punches. Just as the first quarter ended so did the first with Jake Laclair hitting a three for the Eagles to break a tie and they had a 37-34 advantage going into the half.

“They were shooting the ball very well.” Said Saratoga Coach Matt Usher. “It was fast paced and i was happy with how our guys were able to keep it close with the way they were shooting.”

The second half saw the Eagles storm out the gate and with two quick threes by Patrick Ryan, Bethlehem had a 9 point advantage a minute into the second half. Bethlehem went on to dominate the third quarter and were ahead 62-50.

That's when things got interesting, Saratoga went on a 16-4 run to close to game to within 3 at 64-61 with about 3 minutes left but they were no match for Bethlehem. Key Reserve William Davis got the ball in the corner and pumped fake, drove baseline and hit a tough and-one opportunity as the place went wild. It was the second game in a row he had done that and that all but sealed the 75-65 win as Bethlehem Improved to 13-0 Overall 9-0 League and Saratoga Fell to 11-1 Overall and 8-1 League.

“My teammates are great at finding me” Davis said. “The guy flew out and I had the open lane and took it. We want to keep looking forward but all we can afford is the next game and that's Columbia, we like to take it one quarter at a time. Tonight was great though, our fans came out, all the parents and little kids, it was great.”

With a game high 20 points behind six three pointers, Senior Patrick Ryan helped extended the lead after the half for the Eagles and they never looked back.

“We came out of the half ready to play and my teammates did a great job finding me open tonight.” He said. “Coach really emphasized that we need to close out quarters and no turnovers and today we just executed. Mike (Oratle) is so important to us. He doesn't always have to fill up the stats sheet and some people don't realize that, he finds the open man and makes all of us better. It was electric here tonight, we had all our fans here and everyone was jawing at each other, it was great out there.”

Saratoga placed three players in double figure scoring led by Will Fox with 18 points. Aiden Holmes added 16 points, while Nate Chudy chipped in with 13 points.

With the Win Tuesday Night over the Blue Streaks, the Eagles have set themselves up to take the first overall seed come sectionals time. What once was a wide open Class AA now might have just become tighter as i am sure everyone there Tuesday wants to see a rematch come March for the Title.

Albany-

The Albany Cup, last year it was played at Albany Academy and was a very heated game. Albany Academy came out with the win. Well this year bigger venue, and played under the SLAM HS x Zero Gravity Basketball banner at the Washington Avenue Armory.

It was the Eagles of Green Tech who jumped out the early lead and surprised the Cadets. They were out to a 6-2 lead about halfway through the first quarter and that's when the nerves of the game started to settle down for the Cadets. It was then that Andre Jackson, Marcus Jackson and August Mahoney started to impose their will on the offense end. They were down only by three at the end of quarter as Green Tech held a 13-10 lead.

The first two minutes of the second quarter went the Cadets way as they scored six quick points in the first minute and a half. It was soon after that Andre Jackson, the junior star threw down a thunderous alley-oop on a pass from the other star Mahoney and they had a 24-16 lead at that point. As the quarter ended, Academy held a six point lead at 28-22 and it felt as if Tech maybe had the chance to stick it out and make a game.

When the third started it was clear and quick that whatever message Coach Brian Fruscio told his Cadets, it worked as they started to impose their will on the game on the defensive end, making it tough for the Eagles to even pass, as they won the quarter 21-13 and took a 49-35 lead into the fourth where they help the lead and came out with a 67-53 win behind a game high 19 points from Marcus Jackson, while Josh Rodriguez led the Eagles with 19.

“It was our game plan to come out and jump on them early.” Said Eagles Coach DJ Jones “We wanted to control the glass, get out and run and put pressure on them full court. I don’t think they expected us and maybe even underestimated us a little bit. However a couple calls went against us and it changed the tempo of the game.”

While Andre did not score the majority of the teams points, he did not need to as Academy played the team game on Saturday Night.

“It was a great experience to play against some of my friends i play pickup with everyday.” He said. “Even though I did not score a lot today, I did what i had to do for the team, got rebounds and found the open players. They took away some of the things I wanted so I had to go to the other players and i am fine with it, we won so I’m happy with that.”

Averill Park-

When you think of good teams in Section 2 this year you think of Shenendehowa, Bethlehem, Albany Academy, Schalmont, Glens Falls, Saratoga, Troy to just name a few, however CBA and Class A Averill Park need to be in that discussion. Friday Night Christian Brothers Academy came in and beat Averill Park in overtime 65-57 behind Jordan King’s team high 22, while Zach Price paced the warriors with 23.

While it has been an up and down year for the Brothers, you know a Dave Doemel coached team is always going to be scrappy and fight each and every night. With the win on Friday they improve to 7-4 Overall and 6-4 League.

“We are trying to see if we can go forward.” Coach Doemel said. “We want to establish a little bit of a streak here and try to be playing well at the end of the season.”

The game got off to a hot start for the Brothers, as they opened up a quick 7-0 lead behind some good defense and shooting from Senior Jordan King. As the first quarter buzzer sounded CBA was up 17-9, however it felt as if the warriors were not just going to roll over and that's what happened as the second quarter got started.

The warriors started to get hot and were clawing their way back into the ball game as it was 19-15 mid way through the quarter and by the end of it they were up 27-24 and looked to have the momentum on their side for the second half.

As the second half started that looked to be true as the Warriors defense once again heated up and clamped down on the Brothers. They were holding an almost 10 point lead midway through the quarter but CBA went on the offensive and cut the lead down to two as they traded baskets the last two minutes of the quarter, as the Warriors had a slim four point cushion at the end of the quarter.

It was much of the same in the fourth with each team hitting big shots after big shots, however in the last 25 seconds, each team fouled and made free throws to force overtime. CBA then pulled away from there for the win.

“I think our guys played great from the first quarter on.” Said Averill Park Coach Dave Pugliese. “We just got into tremendous foul trouble, they were in the double bonus from midway through the third till the end of the game. It was hard for us to survive that way, but i thought we defended well, and they made big shots. I told the kids we can let this derail us, we are doing really well at 11-4, most of these AA we don't see in sectionals but i believe the A’s are deeper than ever.”

Senior star Jordan King had a quiet 22 points to lead the Brothers, he garners most of the attention when he laces up the shoes each and every game.

“It's a great a feeling when he get a team win like this.”  King Commented “All the guys contributing to the win and it feels great, everyone on the team feels good. This one was big with them being a good team, it boosts our confidence and we go to practice the next day and get better.”

With the win over Averill Park on Friday night, King and his whole team showed they have what it takes to close out a big game and especially on the road in front of a hostile crowd, however sometimes in basketball it takes a little bit of lady luck on your side. They had a little bit of luck and grit Friday Night.
